PoS Units are slowly becoming common items in Chinese retail outlets, restaurants, bars and other service outlets.

Due to low credit and debit card penetration China has come late to PoS. The first local manufacturer of PoS equipment, Shanghai No.2 Electric Instruments Factory, only started to develop the financial PoS units in 1996.

In recent years the market has come to be dominated by the major international manufacturers such as Ingenico, VeriFone and Hypercom. These groups have been assisted through securing major PoS equipment and services deals with China's state banks.
