SUMMARY
The promise of nanotechnology has created lofty expectations in somequarters. The U.S. National Science Foundation is on record as predicting thatthe market for nanotechnology, or products containing nanotechnology, will reach$1 trillion in 10 to 15 years. Along with high expectations, nanotechnologyalso evokes fear in some people. Bill Joy, co-founder of Sun Microsystems,published an article in 2000 in which he called nanotechnology (along withbiotechnology and robotics) a "Faustian bargain" and a "Pandora'sbox," and he called on mankind to relinquish all three technologies. In2002, Michael Crichton's novel Prey, a fictional treatment of the dangers ofnanotechnology, made the New York Times' best seller list. Tellingly, both Joyand Crichton were especially preoccupied with self-replicating nanobots called"molecular assemblers," a development that is probably decades away,if it is in fact feasible at all. Both advocates and opponents of nanotechnologytend to lose sight of the fact that progress in developing commercialnanotechnology applications has been slow. Nanotechnology for the most partremains a set of solutions in search of a problem. In addition to critics andnovelists, this uncertainty about the future of nanotechnology createsdifficulties for investors who sometimes have difficulty separating reality fromhype. This report takes a hard look at the nanotechnology field, and tries toprovide a road map to the technologies and applications that are most likely tobe commercialized in the next 5 years. STUDY BACKGROUNDWhile it appears inevitable that nanotechnology will have a broad andfundamental impact on many sectors of the U.S. economy, various technical,marketing, and other hurdles need to be overcome before nanotechnology fulfillsthis promise. These challenges and differences of opinion regarding theircommercial implications are reflected in the wide divergence among existingestimates of the U.S. and global nanotechnology markets. Global estimates for2004 to 2005 range from $8 billion to $68 billion. Other analystsdownplay the commercial dimensions of the nanotechnology market, focusinginstead on the supply side - that is, the development of new nanoscaletechnologies and applications. These analysts have made valuable contributions,raising investors' awareness of and interest in nanotechnologies. However, byitself, their work does not provide sufficient information in order to guidecorporate or individual investment decisions. Investors require additional data,such as the size of specific nanotechnology markets, prices, and competition, aswell as potential regulation. METHODOLOGY AND INFORMATION SOURCESProjecting the market for emerging technologies, such as most nanotechnologyapplications whose commercial potential has not yet been proven, is achallenging task, which may help to explain why most analysts so far havefocused on supply-side technology assessments. This report uses a multiphaseapproach to identify the nanotechnology applications with the greatestcommercial potential and quantify the market for these applications, asdescribed below. In the first phase of the analysis, we identify a 'long list'of potential nanotechnology applications (including applications that are stillunder development) and map them against potential end-user industries, such asinformation technology/electronics, biotechnology, and health care. In thesecond phase, we eliminate those nanotechnology applications that appear to havelittle likelihood of making it into commercial production in the next 5 years.This is accomplished through a literature review and interviews with industrysources. The result of phase two was is a 'short list' of applications andend-user industries with the greatest near- to mid-term commercial potential. Thethird phase is focused on quantifying the potential broader market for eachshort-listed nanotechnology application and identifying the main prerequisitesfor commercial success.
