SUMMARY

The dynamics of the pet products industry are changing as consumers are now treating their pets as well as they treat themselves. Traditionally, pets were perceived to be property. Today, however, consumers are treating their pets more like children, and "pet parents" have evolved. The "humanization" of pets is affecting the entire industry. Because consumers are now demanding the same luxuries for their pets, the pet products industry is booming.

In 2005, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), total spending on all pet products increased by an estimated 4.4% to $35.9 billion. From 1999 to 2004, spending grew at an average annual rate of nearly 7.0%. Growth in the pet industry will be strong again in 2006, as spending on pet products should increase by at least 4.0%.

It should be noted that several manufacturers have cited a recent trend towards store brands. According to data presented in Doane Pet Care Company's 10K, sales of store-brand pet foods have increased at a much faster pace than those for nationally advertised brand foods. In fact, sales of store brand pet foods reportedly increased at a compound annual rate of 8.8% for the period from 2001 to 2005, compared to 3.7% for nationally advertised brands.
