SUMMARY
Shipments of cell phones grew at a very healthy rate in the fourth quarter, up 14% from the same period a year ago, and up 12% from Q3, according to a new In-Stat/MDR report called "Quarterly Handset Shipments Soar: Q4 2003." For the year, shipment totals set a record at 504 million units. The strong quarter and year were driven by: - Robust replacement demand in mature markets
- Steady rise in new subscribers in Latin America, China, India and Eastern Europe
- Strong demand for camera phones
- Color displays spurring new sales
- Local Number Portability (LNP) spurring a bump up in new orders
