SUMMARY
Summary
The image sensor market continued to show impressive year-over-year growth in
2005, a trend that should continue through 2006 and beyond. Camera phones
dominated the market for digital camera shipments, with digital still cameras
a distant second. Security cameras, camcorders, and web cameras all shipped
significant quantities in 2005.
In image sensor technology, CMOS continued its recent dominance over CCDs, due
primarily to the market for camera phones, where CMOS is preferred due to its
low power consumption, as well as easy integration of other camera functions
on chip. CCDs are still quite popular as well, especially in digital still
cameras, camcorders, and security cameras.
In the market for linear image sensors, CIS reigned dominant over CCDs due to
the increasing popularity of multifunction peripherals, devices that copy,
scan, print, and fax. CCDs, in turn, fared better in applications that
required greater speed, including scanners and digital copiers. Linear CMOS
sensors began to emerge in 2005.
This report provides a complete review of the 2005 market for image sensors,
as well as annual forecast numbers through 2010. CCD, CMOS, and CIS market
shares for each application, in both units and revenues, are provided annually
for the entire forecast period. Profiles of the world’s leading image sensor
suppliers are also presented.
