SUMMARY

Wireless LAN (WLAN) technology has become a standard part of business networks. These deployments range from WLANs in meeting and conference rooms to Wi-Fi handsets in manufacturing and warehouse facilities. However, portable computers with Wi-Fi and inexpensive wireless routers have made connectivity even more pervasive outside of the business. And the growing number of consumer equipment with embedded Wi-Fi will increase connectivity options for workers more in the future.

These trends pose two key security challenges for IT managers:

  • Protecting company data that resides on mobile devices used by employees
  • Protecting company operations and assets from malware or theft incurred by portable devices that connect to the network

Within wireless security, In-Stat has identified two addressable markets: client security to protect data when it is transmitted or stored on portable devices and facility security to monitor the RF environment and enforce wireless policies to protect network operations and assets in the business premise. Together, these markets are projected to reach $10.2 billion by 2011.
