SUMMARY
Furniture production in Western Europe is worth about Euro 75 billion accounting for 35.6% of the world furniture supply. Italy is the leadingfurniture producer in Europe, followed by Germany and France. This report offers a comprehensive picture of the furniture sector in 16 Western European countries, providing trends in furniture production andconsumption, furniture imports and exports, prices, marketing policies and furniture distribution. For each country data on furniture production andconsumption are broken down by product (office furniture, kitchen furniture, upholstered furniture, other furniture). The European furniture industry is characterised by the presence of small to medium-sized companies and shows therefore a low degree ofconcentration: the top ten European furniture companies provide less than 11% of total European furniture supply. Profiles of the most representativefurniture producers and distributors are provided, with turnover, market shares, employees, number of outlets and product mix. A number of European countries play an important role in international furniture trade: Italy, Germany, France and Denmark are among the top tenfurniture exporters in the world. For each country furniture imports and exports are broken down by country and product (office furniture, kitchenfurniture, upholstered furniture, bedroom furniture, furniture for dining and living rooms, seats, furniture parts). The European furniture sector is witnessing an increasing internationalisation of distribution. The analysis of furniture distribution channelsincludes: independent furniture retailers, buying groups, furniture large-scale specialist distribution, non-specialist department stores, furniturespecialists, direct sales and building trade, mail order, DIY. The wood and forestry sector is also considered: production, imports, exports and consumption data are provided for the main semi-finished woodproducts (sawnwood; wood-based panels: plywood, veneer sheets, particle board panels, fibreboard panels, MDF). An appendix of some 1,000 addresses of furniture companies mentioned in the report is available (in XLS format upon request).
