SUMMARY
Harvard Business School: under an agreement with Faculty of Harvard University
Business School, this report is used for preparing one of the case studies
used for teaching by HBS.
Telecom operators and equipment makers: many leading telecom operators and
telecom equipment makers all over the world have purchased our wallet phone
report to support planning the introduction of wallet phone systems.
The wallet phone is the next stage in the evolution of mobile phones. Wallet
phones will soon become an essential part of the everyday life infrastructure.
Wallet phones are pioneered by NTT-DoCoMo by combining a multi-application
smart card with i-Mode phones. Wallet phones can be used as prepaid electronic
cash, tickets, access control cards, authorizations to access corporate
networks, membership cards for clubs and loyalty programs. Selected
information, for example the remaining electronic cash balance, or some
transaction records, can be directly read offline by the cell phone. Wallet
phones can contain all credit cards, entrance tickets, train tickets, air
tickets, employee ID cards, and most other instruments we currently carry in
our purse. Integration of multi-application smartcards into mobile phones,
will make cellphones an essential part of our daily life infrastructure. The
present report describes the concept of the wallet phone as implemented in
Japan by DoCoMo, describes about 30 applications currently tested in approx.
60 pages with about than 10 photographs.
