SUMMARY
Aspen Pharmacare is Africa's largest manufacturer of generic drugs, and the
leading supplier of generic products to both the private and public sectors in
South Africa. Aspen has pioneered the development of generic drugs in South
Africa. This report provides an insight into the company, reviewing its
current business structure and activities.
Aspen Pharmacare's present form started with the company's listing on the
Johannesburg Stock Exchange through the reverse takeover of Medhold in July
1998. In January 1999, Medhold was renamed Aspen, and in March 1999, Aspen
acquired the pharmaceutical business of South African Druggists, Pharmacare
Limited. One of Pharmacare's leading brands is Lennon, which comprised
Pharmacare's generic drugs portfolio, and has a well-established position in
the South African market. The company renamed itself Aspen Pharmacare in May
2000. Aspen claims to be the largest pharmaceutical firm listed on the
Johannesburg Stock Exchange, and aims to be the largest and most dynamic
pharmaceutical business in South Africa.
The company is split into two divisions, the Pharmaceutical Division and the
Consumer Division; each of these are then further sub-divided into business
areas. The Pharmaceutical Division comprises the company's Generics business
and its Ethicals business. Aspen claims to be the largest supplier of generic
pharmaceuticals to both the private and public sectors in South Africa.
Aspen's generic drugs range is the core of its public sector business,
including the supply of state tenders, public sector hospitals and parastatal
institutions.
Aspen's Ethicals business markets a wide range of original drugs, and the
company claims to be a leader in the female healthcare, tranquillisers and
hypnotics, and cardiovascular medicines categories.
The Consumer Division is split into Aspen's OTC business and Fast Moving
Consumer Goods business. The company's OTC goods are distributed solely to
pharmacies; the company has a niche in the natural product sector and in
lifestyle products, such as slimming products. The FMCG business is
distributed through retail chains, and includes products such as deodorants.
In addition to the company's presence in South Africa, Aspen also has a
presence in foreign markets. The company has 337 dossiers registered abroad,
and exports to over 30 countries. Most of these are in Sub-Saharan and North
Africa, but other markets are in Asia Pacific, Central America, the Middle
East and North America.
Aspen also has businesses in Australia and the United Kingdom.
In addition, Aspen set up another UK-based subsidiary, Aspen Resources, in
2004. The subsidiary has been set up to acquire intellectual property in
international markets. It will also procure the related products and supply
these to subcontracted distributors. Aspen Resources' first acquisition was of
twelve products in the Australian market from Eli Lilly.
This report provides information on the company's active product lines and
ANDA approvals, along with a review of major developments, such as M&A
activity, strategic alliances and litigation. The company's most recent
quarterly and annual financial results are illustrated with comparative
figures, charts and a detailed review of the data which allows you to track
