Dr Reddy's Laboratories was founded in 1984 in Hyderabad, India, by Dr Anji
Reddy. This report provides an insight into the company, reviewing its current
business structure and activities.
In fiscal 2000, the Dr Reddy's merged with Cheminor Drugs Ltd., and American
Remedies Ltd., both companies part of the Dr. Reddy's Group. In 2001, Dr.
Reddy's became the first Asia Pacific pharmaceutical company, outside Japan,
to list on the New York Stock Exchange. In the same year, the company was the
first Indian pharmaceutical company to obtain 180-day exclusive marketing
rights for a generic drug in the US market with the launch of fluoxetine 40 mg
capsules.
Dr Reddy's has an interest in more than 60 countries. Major export markets
include the UK, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia
and the United States. In 2002, Dr. Reddy's made its first overseas
acquisitions, both of which were in the United Kingdom: BMS Laboratories
Limited and Meridian Healthcare, UK. More recently, in 2003, Dr Reddy's set up
a joint venture in South Africa: Dr Reddy's Laboratories (Proprietary) Ltd,
South Africa, a 60:40 joint venture with Venturepharma. The company has other
joint ventures and subsidiaries in a number of countries, including Brazil,
China, France, the Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the
United States. Dr Reddy's also has representative offices in Kazakhstan,
Romania, Sri Lanka, Ukraine and Vietnam.
In November 2005, Dr Reddy's announced it had signed a definitive agreement to
acquire Roche's API business at its manufacturing site in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
Dr Reddy's commented that the investment outlay was around US$59 million. This
was followed in February 2006 by an agreement with 3i for Dr Reddy's to
acquire the German firm, betapharm. The company is the fourth-largest generic
pharmaceuticals company in Germany, and the agreement is for a total
enterprise value of 480 million euros (US$569.6 million).
Dr Reddy's is structured into a number of businesses: Branded Finished
Dosages, Generic Finished Dosages, Bulk Activities (APIs), Custom Pharma
Services, Biotechnology, Critical Care, and Discovery Research.
