SUMMARY

Gedeon Richter

Company Intelligence Report

Gedeon Richter is Hungary's oldest and largest pharmaceutical manufacturer, dating back to 1901. This report provides an insight into the company, reviewing its current business structure and activities.

Gedeon Richter's plant was nationalised in 1948, and it lost its Western European export markets and its subsidiaries; the company instead focused on its Eastern European markets, successfully entering the Polish and Czechoslovak markets, and launching exports to the Soviet Union in 1954. By 1960, Gedeon Richter was the largest supplier of pharmaceutical products to COMECON member countries and the Soviet Union. From the 1970s and through the 1980s, the company began again to expand into Western markets, and diversified into agricultural chemicals and veterinary medicines. With the collapse of COMECON in the early 1990s, the resulting loss of traditional markets, coupled with the economic instability in the region hit Gedeon Richter severely. In response, the company phased out its production of herbicides, veterinary medicines and cosmetics, and upgraded its portfolio of human pharmaceuticals. Gedeon Richter introduced a more market-led strategy and began to recover its old markets, whilst continuing to increase its exports to Western markets.

Today, the company carries out research, development, manufacturing and marketing of human finished drugs, active substances and intermediates. Production in Hungary takes place in plants in Budapest and Dorog, but the company also has production plants in Russia, Romania, Ukraine and India. The company has marketing/wholesaling subsidiaries in the USA, France, Germany and Ukraine, and owns a 50% stake in major Hungarian distributor, Medimpex. In April 2001, Richter purchased a 5% equity stake in the Russian wholesaler, Protek. Gedeon Richter has a presence in 30 countries. At the end of 2005, the company employed 5,876 people.

This report provides information on the company's active product lines and ANDA approvals, along with a review of major developments, such as M&A activity, strategic alliances and litigation. The company's most recent quarterly and annual financial results are illustrated with comparative figures, charts and a detailed review of the data which allows you to track the company's progress.
