SUMMARY
Perrigo's roots stretch back to 1887, when Luther Perrigo, the proprietor of a
general store and apple drying business, began to package and distribute
patented medicines and household items for country stores in the United
States. This report provides an insight into the company, reviewing its
current business structure and activities.
By the 1920s, Perrigo had expanded into producing private labels for
customers, and in the 1930s, Perrigo moved into manufacturing instead of just
packaging.
Perrigo's headquarters are in Allegan, Michigan. In the US, Perrigo has
manufacturing facilities in Michigan and South Carolina. In addition, the
company has subsidiaries in the United Kingdom and Mexico. In the UK, Perrigo
owns Wrafton Laboratories, and recently acquired a second firm, Peter Black
Pharmaceuticals, whilst in Mexico there is Quimica Y Farmacia. Wrafton is a
supplier of store brand products to grocery and pharmacy retailers, and a
contract manufacturer of OTC pharmaceuticals, and was formed in 1992 following
a management buyout from Whitehall Laboratories, a subsidiary of American Home
Products. Perrigo acquired the company in June 2001. Peter Black
Pharmaceuticals, which the company acquired in December 2003, manufactures
store brand vitamin and nutritional supplements for grocery stores, pharmacies
and contract customers. The Mexican operation mainly manufactures OTC and
prescription pharmaceuticals for retail, wholesale and governmental customers.
During fiscal 2005, Perrigo acquired the Israeli company, Agis, an act which
effectively re-defined the company. Agis was Israel's second largest
pharmaceutical manufacturer, and the merger has created a global company with
greater capabilities to grow in the generic, API and consumer healthcare
businesses. Following the acquisition, Perrigo realigned its business to
reflect a more diversified portfolio of products. Perrigo's businesses are now
divided into the following:
- Consumer Healthcare business, comprising store brand OTC and
nutritional products, including operations in the US, UK and Mexico;
- Rx Pharmaceuticals business, comprising topical and solid-dose oral
generic prescription products;
- API business;
- Other business, comprising cosmetics, toiletries and detergents and
branded pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and other medical products for the
Israeli market.
As of June 2005, Perrigo had 5,848 employees. Of these, 3,245 were in the US,
1,542 were in Israel, 628 were in the UK, 360 were in Mexico and 73 were in
Germany.
