SUMMARY
The Japanese firm, Sawai Pharmaceutical, was established as Sawai Pharmacy in
Asahi-ku, Osaka, in 1929. This report provides an insight into the company,

Sawai Pharmaceutical was incorporated in 1948, and in 1961, it set up
manufacturing lines for OTCs in its head office factory. In 1965, Sawai
changed from an OTC manufacturer to ethical pharmaceuticals, and three years
later, completed its second factory; other factories followed from the late
1980s onwards. In 1985, Sawai incorporated Medisa Shinyaku, which was set up
as a wholly-owned subsidiary in 1991. The company opened its Osaka Laboratory
in 1984, built a research and development centre in 1990, and opened its
pharmaceutical research centre in 1994. In 1995, Sawai was listed on the OTC
stock market, and in 2000, it was listed on the second section of the Tokyo
Stock Exchange. In 2003, it was listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock
Exchange.
Sawai deals in the export and import, manufacturing and sales of
pharmaceutical products and healthcare foods. The company claims 300 ethical
pharmaceuticals, such as antibiotics, cardiovascular drugs and drugs to treat
cancer, as well as OTC drugs. Sawai has area offices across Japan, in
Tokyo-higashi, Tokyo-nishi, Yokohama, Kita-kanto, Joshinetsu, Hokuriku,
Shizuoka, Kyoto, Kobe, Takamatsu, and Matsuyama. In addition, the company has
branches in Sapporo, Sendai, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka.
Sawai has alliances with Meiji Seika Kaisha, Sekisui Chemical, Nihon Schering,
Fuso Pharmaceutical, Mitsubishi Pharma, and Daiichi Suntory Pharma. It employs
around 500 people.le.
