SUMMARY
Value of US shipments to reach $20 billion in 2006 With gains arising from a recessionary 2001 base, US shipments of paints andcoatings are forecast to increase 2.7 percent per year to 1.4 billion gallons in2006, essentially tracking inflationadjusted gains in the US economy. Gains arebased on a solid domestic market and favorable export opportunities forUS-produced coatings, particularly within NAFTA. The value of paints andcoatings shipments is forecast to reach $20 billion in 2006, reflecting higherraw material costs and greater pricing flexibility among suppliers. Durable equipment coatings hold strongest growth prospects Strongest gains are forecast for durable equipment coatings, particularlycoatings used on metal building components, industrial equipment and machineryand aerospace equipment. Coatings used on industrial equipment and machinery, asegment that is dominated by off-road equipment such as construction, mining andagricultural machinery, is recovering from cyclical lows brought on by the USrecession. Demand for motor vehicle coatings will benefit from a solid outlook in USmotor vehicle production levels, with gains arising off a weak 2001 base. Themarket for refinish coatings will benefit from steady gains in the number ofvehicles in use on US roadways, as well as the continuing popularity of largervehicles such as sport utilities, minivans and pickup trucks. Architectural paint shipments will post below-average gains, though thisforecast represents a substantial improvement over the sector\'s performanceover the second half of the 1990s. Though the US construction industry isentering a period of significantly slower growth after the boom period of the1990s, expenditures dedicated to residential repair and improvement are expectedto accelerate through 2006. Shipments of maintenance and specialty coatings will exhibit below-averagegains, although, like architectural paints, forecast growth will accelerate fromthe recent pace of this sector. The most rapid gains are forecast for trafficcoatings, though both packaging coatings and industrial maintenance coatingswill reverse recent declines to post solid gains through 2006.
