SUMMARY

US demand to grow 12% yearly through 2007

Demand for photoresists and ancillaries (encompassing photoresists used in the production of both semiconductors and printed circuit boards, as well as related lithographic chemicals such as strippers/removers, developers and antireflective coatings) is forecast to expand twelve percent per year to $1.2 billion in 2007, with gains based on a projected recovery in electronic component shipments from a weak 2001 base.

New generation electronics to drive gains

The semiconductor industry currently is enduring a steep and protracted downturn that emerged at the end of 2000 and extended through the end of 2002 with only moderate relief. Nevertheless, long-term prospects for semiconductors and related materials such as photoresists remain favorable, with future growth driven by the processing requirements of new generations of wireless communications, handhelds, video/graphics, smartcard applications and laptop and notebook computers.

In this intense environment, electronic chemical suppliers are teaming up with equipment suppliers and customers to meet the inexorable drive to make smaller chips, increase memory and speed, and streamline fabrication processes. Since the ability to shrink device sizes is directly dependent upon the ability of the photolithography process to improve resolution and overlay parameters and thus create finer circuit widths, photoresists and ancillaries are a highly competitive and research-intensive sector.

Major material-related trends in the electronic components industry include the shift to 300 mm wafers, the use of copper interconnects over aluminum, a move to low-k dielectric materials, and the continuing rapid diffusion of chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) processes in wafer fabrication.

Conventional products to remain dominant

The downturn of 2001-2002 removed many less costefficient production lines but also had the effect of impeding technological development and the implementation for new technologies, particularly the move to 193 nanometer (nm) design nodes and a shift to deep ultraviolet (DUV) photoresists. In this environment, I-line photoresists have retained their industry dominance much longer than expected, and these workhorse products will continue to show solid growth through 2007, though they will continue to yield market share to next generation products, particularly DUV. Older g-line photoresists remain an important segment, based on the existing base of steppers based on 436 nm technology, though demand will gradually decline as these processes are phased out.

Demand for dry film resists, used in PCB manufacturing, will post below average gains based on a weaker outlook for the PCB sector overall. In part, this will reflect the exodus of PCB from North America to Asia, particularly China. Among ancillaries, antireflective coatings are expected to post the strongest annual gains based upon their ability to improve the results of photolithography operations for semiconductor fabrication.
