SUMMARY

US demand to exceed $4 billion in 2010

Demand for dairy packaging is forecast to exceed $4 billion in 2010. Growth will be fueled by favorable trends in dairy product consumption resulting from growing nutritional awareness among consumers and heightened demand for fresh foods as part of a healthier diet.

The rising percentage of spending on food eaten away from home will bode well for dairy packaging based on the importance of dairy products such as cheese, cream and butter as key ingredients in a variety of restaurant menu items (e.g., sandwiches, pizza, salads, coffee).

While aggregate per capita consumption of dairy products will remain essentially flat, packaging demand will benefit from trends such as smaller container sizes and greater use of value-added options such as reclosable zippers on pouches.

Plastic bottles, pouches to post above-average gains

Tubs and cups, bottles, and cartons are the leading packaging types with dairy products, accounting for two-thirds of demand in 2005. Best advances among these segments are expected for bottles as a result of rapid growth for single-serving plastic bottles, which are increasingly popular and supplanting gabletop cartons in school lunch programs, quick service restaurants and vending machines.

Pouches will also log above-average gains, benefitting from the continued popularity of shredded cheese, along with rising demand for ice cream novelties and yogurt targeted at on-the-go snacking.

Despite declining per capita consumption, milk, the largest single dairy packaging application, will experience improved unit growth resulting from heightened demand for smaller container sizes. In addition, rapidly expanding sales of organic milk will provide a growth niche for gabletop cartons, as most organic milk is packaged in gabletops.

Cream, cultured dairy products fastest growing

Among major applications, cultured dairy products and cream will enjoy the fastest growth. Cultured dairy packaging opportunities will be driven by strong expansion for yogurt, including drinkable types, items targeted at children and varieties with added health benefits. Cream applications will benefit from the growing popularity of away-from-home coffee, especially in specialty coffee houses, convenience stores, quick service restaurants and less traditional venues such as book store cafes.
