SUMMARY
US cup and lid demand to reach $6.3 billion in 2010
Demand for cups and lids is projected to exceed $6 billion in 2010. Gains will
be driven by continued growth in disposable personal income levels and a
favorable outlook for foodservice revenues, especially in high-volume cup and
lid consuming segments like quick service restaurants, coffee and snack shops,
and convenience stores. Drinking cup and lid prospects will benefit from
heightened demand for larger cups and specialty lids.
Packaging cups to lead gains
While drinking cups will continue to dominate the market, the packaging cup
segment will post the fastest gains, fueled by expanding applications for
singleserving packaging offering convenience and portability in a variety of
foods. Yogurt, one of the largest single packaging cup applications, will
continue to benefit from trends toward healthier eating, which will drive
product manufacturers to continue to expand their yogurt offerings via a
steady stream of items in new flavors and textures, or the introduction of
products with additional health benefits or products targeting specific
demographic cohorts, such as children.
Lids to outpace cups
Lid demand will outpace cup demand, attributable to an expanding market for
takeout beverages and food, along with growing demand for higher-value
specialty lids. Best advances are anticipated for flexible and rigid lids for
packaging applications based on continued strong growth for single-serving cup
packaging. A favorable outlook for foodservice revenues will also boost demand
for portionsized cups for packaging items such as creamers, butter and sauces,
which will in turn support heightened lid demand.
