SUMMARY

This IDC Update analyzes the impact of SARS in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ. It is clear that the SARS outbreak will have a significant, although not dramatic, effect on IT spending in the region. At constant 2002 exchange rates, the market is now expected to reach US$76.1 billion in 2003, as compared with the previous forecast of US$77.1 billion, an impact of approximately US$1 billion, thus reducing the expected growth rate for the industry to 6.1% from 7.6%. Much of the impact is being felt immediately in the second quarter of 2003. Hardware will be hardest hit, although there will be an impact on software and IT services spending as well. Analysis of vertical markets shows they will be impacted to differing degrees. As consumer panic is clearly part of the initial response to the SARS outbreak in a territory, it is not surprising that the consumer and transportation markets are expected to be hit hardest in SARS-infected countries, with the distribution sector predicted to be third hardest hit.
