SUMMARY

This IDC study examines the largest worldwide outsourcing contracts signed in 2002. Including IS outsourcing, network and desktop outsourcing, application outsourcing, processing services, and business process outsourcing deals, this document looks at all contracts valued above $80 million and analyzes the wins by value, length, date, geography, industry, and outsourcer.

The document looks at whether there are any trends inherent in the top 100 worldwide outsourcing deals in 2002. Do some companies sign more deals than others? Have some previously active or inactive vendors started to sign more or less deals in 2002? What do these contracts indicate for the future of outsourcing?

"The popularity of outsourcing in recent years has been driven by a number of factors, including companies' needs to focus on core competencies, reallocate internal resources, and reduce and/or stabilize costs and improve efficiencies in a highly volatile, highly competitive global business environment. Companies have also looked to outsourcing as a way to stay at the forefront of rapidly advancing technology and gain access to skilled IT talent." - Cynthia Doyle, program manager of IDC's IT Outsourcing and Utility Services research program
