SUMMARY
Abstract
This IDC study provides residual value forecasts and current fair market value
data for portable personal computers from tier 1 vendors. The study explains
the current market conditions that are affecting the value of used hardware on
the secondary market and what future technological changes will further impact
these values. We explore the factors impacting the portable market and the
price/performance increases expected over the next several years. This
information helps those who invest in hardware assess their risk and provides
guidance on the amount of residual value that is expected to be realized at the
end of lease term.
"The lower price points and increased energy efficiency of new portable PC
systems is making the value proposition of used systems less appealing.
Although the life cycles of systems have extended in the past couple of years,
the value of the hardware at the end of the lease will be lower than it was in
the recent past." - Jennifer Koppy, research manager, IDC's Technology
Valuation Strategies.
