SUMMARY
This report presents Q1/2005-Q3/2006 quarterly transceiver sales data
collected by LightCounting, Inc. in a recent survey of 27 optical transceiver
vendors. It offers a comprehensive analysis of the sales data, highlighting
trends observed in the communication market segments and product categories.
The report covers all types of optical transceivers used in SONET/SDH,
Ethernet, Fibre Channel, CWDM/DWDM, FTTx and optical backplane applications.
Executive Summary
The encouraging growth trend in transceiver sales continued through 2006,
resulting in three continual years of growth for this market. After surviving
the "Dark Ages" between 2001 and 2003, the transceiver market turned the
corner in the first quarter of 2004 and has maintained a steady momentum for
the last ten quarters. In the first three quarters of 2006, global sales of
optical transceivers increased by an impressive 24%, compared to the same
period in 2005
The growth in 2006 is due primarily to increasing sales in the following product categories:
- 4 Gbps Fibre Channel modules for storage networks
- 10 Gbps, including Ethernet, SONET/SDH, and DWDM modules for enterprise
and telecom applications
- Transceiver modules for fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) networks
