SUMMARY

This report is split into four parts and provides an insight into the potential for UMTS 850 and the developments so far.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

1. UMTS 850: the potential by region

This section examines the potential opportunity and barriers to UMTS 850 deployment by region. Latin America is a fertile ground for this technology. Here we discuss the region in detail along with timeframes and the possibility of other technology operators switching to UMTS.

  • Key messages
  • Potential for UMTS 850 by region
  • North America - proven potential with more to come
  • Latin America and the Caribbean - huge potential
  • Asia-Pacific - some potential
  • Europe - no potential
  • Switching to UMTS 850
  • UMTS 850 gives CDMA operators a pathway to GSM
  • Switching in the presence of other technologies
  • Regulation

2. UMTS 850: opportunities for operators

  • Cingular, the largest North American operator, has led UMTS 850 deployment and provides a significant proportion of the scale required for its success. It will be followed by Telstra in Australia and Rogers in Canada. However, the market for UMTS 850 beyond these operators is not yet clear. Our research has found that UMTS economies of scale are emerging, and we expect the UMTS 850 market to be large. Handset support is a critical factor - this will be limited until 2007. This section examines UMTS 850's advantages, deployments and implications for operators.
  • Key messages
  • Advice for 850MHz spectrum holders
  • Implications for European operators
  • Introduction to UMTS 850
  • UMTS is being rapidly deployed worldwide
  • The launch of services at UMTS 850
  • Why UMTS 850?
  • Advantages will lead to further deployments
  • UMTS 850 is contributing to fragmenting UMTS spectrum
  • Infrastructure

3. UMTS 850: device availability

Here we look at the potential of the UMTS 850 handset range, chipset direction, Cingular's ability to drive volumes and the emerging business case for tri-band UMTS devices.

  • Key messages
  • Chipsets
  • Ericsson Mobile Platforms (EMP)
  • Qualcomm
  • Texas Instruments (TI)
  • Freescale
  • Handsets
  • UMTS 850 handset requirements vary
  • UMTS 850 handsets availability - when and at what cost?
  • Cingular's volumes are key
  • Vendors in the planning stage but 850 timeframes are being pushed back
  • Telstra is most likely to rely on Cingular in the short term
  • Low-cost handsets in short supply in the short term
  • Available UMTS 850 handsets
  • UMTS 850 datacards

4. UMTS 850: implications for Telstra

  • Telstra is currently replacing its national CDMA network with a UMTS/HSDPA network operating in the 850MHz band. Ovum has tracked developments closely and has recently completed global research on UMTS 850. This section explores the implications for Telstra, handset availability and the challenges it faces migrating to UMTS 850
  • Key messages
  • Telstra is reliant on its national network
  • Device range
  • UMTS 850 deployments are unlikely in the short term
  • Datacard availability will be strong
  • Handset availability is less clear
  • Migration
  • Telstra's CDMA subscribers fit into two categories
  • Migration speed is aggressive and ambitious
  • Migration costs will be huge
  • Timeframe
  • National 3G footprint will be a powerful asset
  • Wholesale access
