SUMMARY
This report analyses current trends in the operator mobile device management
(MDM) server software market and competitive landscape. It also provides an
overview of individual suppliers' offerings and positioning in the market.
MDM as a whole is relatively well established as a market; there is now a fast
growing user base of operators worldwide. Some estimate that up to 40% of
operators worldwide have deployed some form of MDM software, mainly OTA
configuration server software. Our own research suggests that this figure is
closer to 30% in developed markets and as low as 5% in the developing world.
This is in line with last year's forecasts and means that many vendors have
doubled their user base over the past 6- 12 months. The number RFPs and RFQs
have increased sharply over the past 12 months and at least 30 new contracts
have been publicly announced since May 2005 - keeping in mind that many
vendors do not report on new wins and deployments.
This does not mean, however, that the market is mature. MDM server software
offerings are not standardised, the technology is still evolving, operators
are still planning large-scale deployments and many vendors are busy deciding
on their next move. We expect the market to take a very different shape over
the coming year.
