SUMMARY
The OED is the most versatile optical network element, adaptable to more
network applications and user types than any other. The acronym itself, which
stands for optical edge device, masks the wide range of access and core
network applications that these products address. The OED segment is currently
the largest ON market, making up more than 86 percent of the $6 billion plus
in annualized global aggregation sales. OED is also the most crowded segment,
with more than 35 vendors marketing over 100 products that range from
purpose-built one-rack-unit customer premise equipment to large core transport
multiplexers with 100 Gbps switch fabrics. There are also large variations in
standards, requirements, and market share by region. Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei,
and Fujitsu are the top three OED vendors.
