SUMMARY
In DWDM backbone transport, 40G looms slightly larger on the horizon,
particularly in North America, but cost issues remain. Adaptive dispersion
compensation remains the most popular way to achieve 40G, though QDPSK
generates interest as a future alternative, if not compelling price points as
an alternative today. Siemens enhanced its competitive position with a more
cost-effective entry point with the hiT 7300, and joins Alcatel, Ciena, and
Nortel among the established competitors benefiting most strongly from the
rebound in multi-reach, while ZTE maintains its strong position in long-haul
DWDM. Start-up Infinera made greater inroads at 10G and drew attention to 100G
in the form of 10 x 10G inverse multiplexing. Huawei has firmly established
itself as a competitor in this segment, but faces stronger competition as its
costs of international operations rise and the cost competitiveness of its
rivals increases. Alcatel continues to lead the market and scored wins with
ROADM. A crowded market segment that endured particularly bad times in the
downturn, DWDM backbone transport now has strategic importance and is making a
comeback due to next-gen core builds and a focus on opex optimization and
was worth the wait.
