SUMMARY
The worldwide wireless market has witnessed unforeseen growth and expansion
over the last 25 years. This growth is ascribed to several factors,
significantly the fusion of the wired and the wireless. This report presents a
detailed analysis of the various business models and strategies, and forecasts
on the market trends. It also talks about the effect of Wireless Local Area
Network (WLAN) on the cellular data market and services.
Several technologies, namely, WAP, MIS, 3G, GSM, RFID, have all played a
significant role in fusing mobile technology with Internet. The USP of the
mobile communication devices is their connectivity and accessibility between
any two places at any point of time. The mobile wireless is now even providing
wireless broadband data services.
A report released by In-Stat/MDR in 2003 predicted that there were going to be
more than 931 million new mobile wireless Internet subscribers over the next
five years. Taking in account the present market scenario, the total number of
worldwide wireless subscribers will exceed the two billion mark by 2007. An
Intermarket Group report says that in this very year (2005), more than
one-third of the total mobile wireless Internet users will connect through
wireless handset devices.
According to the market trends, global market for wireless Internet-capable
devices is expected to grow enormously in 2005, reaching a figure of more than
1.7 billion mobile connections-a growth of around 630 percent. The annual rate
of growth for the shipment of wireless internet-capable devices is predicted
to be 15.5 percent over the next few years, leading to the figure of 880
million units in 2007.
As per a Mobinet study conducted in the United States, United Kingdom, France,
Germany, Finland, and Japan on over 2,400 users of mobile phones, it was
revealed that the global dispersion of Internet-enabled mobile phones is
around 24 percent. Japan (55 percent) and Germany (36 percent) attribute to a
major part of this percentage, while the United States is way behind with just
14 percent. But the numbers are growing, and the changing wireless user
demographics are making the industry happy.
The combination of wireless technology and mobile computing has also opened up
new vistas for the educational world. Mobile learning, or m-learning, which is
based on the use of mobile devices combined with wireless infrastructure, has
come out as the latest development in the field of education. The emergence of
this market has also given a huge growth opportunity to the WLAN market.
The WLAN industry is one of those segments in the global communications
industry that are exhibiting maximum growth. With revenues of $1.5 billion,
the newly emergent Wlan technology has become a part of the mainstream
technology. The overall market scenario is now redefined.
