SUMMARY
Synopsis
Automotive continues to be one of the steadiest and most dependable sectors
for semiconductor suppliers to serve. This is primarily the result of an
on-going trend in automotive system design, from mechanical to
electromechanical, or electronic systems. This is a trend which most industry
watchers forecast to continue for the next 15-20 years. In addition, the
pervasion of advanced entertainment systems such as DVD infotainment,
satellite radio, HDD-MP3 juke boxes and cellphone connectivity, has resulted
in semiconductors becoming an ever more integral part of the modern passenger
car, and a correspondingly ever increasing proportion of the electronic
content.
This Semicast study looks at demand for many of the key automotive systems
found in passenger cars and light trucks and then rationalizes that demand to
forecasts and trends for semiconductor consumption. Owing to long design
cycles associated with the automotive industry, forecasts are presented
through to 2015.
Key Conclusions:
- Total OE system production volumes in the automotive sector are forecast
to rise from 890 million in 2007 to 1.5 billion in 2015.
- Highest volume OE applications are door electronics, solid state lighting
and engine control.
- OE semiconductor consumption in the automotive sector is forecast to grow
from $20 billion in 2007 to over $30 billion in 2015. Revenue growth is
forecast to be highest in the OE entertainment sector, followed by body &
chassis and safety systems.
- China is forecast to be by far the fastest growing region for automotive
semiconductors over the period to 2015, at a CAGR of almost 20%.
- Highest demand is forecast for analog ICs (predominantly application
specific analog), followed by MCU/MPU/DSP. Fastest growth is forecast for
memory ICs.
- Freescale, Infineon Technologies, STMicroelectronics, NXP and Renesas are
estimated to have been the top 5 suppliers of OE automotive semiconductors in
2007.
- Revenues for automotive aftermarket semiconductors are forecast to grow
from over $2 billion in 2007 to almost $4 billion in 2015.
Key Features:
- Coverage of the total market for automotive semiconductors, including OE
and aftermarket.
- Estimate for worldwide production volumes of 34 OE automotive systems,
with forecasts to 2015.
- Segmentation of semiconductor market into 18 product types, with forecasts
to 2015.
- Regional analysis of automotive semiconductor market by North America,
Europe, Japan, China and Rest of the World, with forecasts to 2015.
- Analysis of supplier market shares for OE automotive semiconductors in
2007.
- Highly quantitative analysis, with discussion summarized in short, easy to
read bullet points.
- PDF and Excel delivery options available.
