SUMMARY

WiMAX and its precursors are being used for fixed Broadband Wireless networks today. The IEEE 802.16-2004 version of WiMAX is being adopted by carriers in developing countries as their primary means for providing broadband services, by competitive carriers globally to penetrate new markets, and by large incumbent carriers to extend their broadband networks into rural areas; This report identifies about 75 Broadband Wireless deployments globally including many in developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America as well as competitive carriers and incumbent carriers in Europe and North America.

This report discusses the technical and regulatory factors that are leading to the deployment of WiMAX fixed services. It discusses the strategies of fourteen service providers offering Broadband Wireless data services and 17 systems and component companies that are addressing this market. This report discusses how these companies expect that WiMAX will be used to address the broadband data market.

This report presents the business case for WiMAX in Broadband Wireless networks. It compares the business case for WiMAX to DSL and shows how WiMAX will be competitive with fixed broadband technologies. Two business cases are shown. One is for the business applications that are being deployed today. The second is for the consumer applications that will be widely deployed as low cost mass market customer equipment becomes available.

The report also includes a set of market forecasts for the WiMAX Broadband Wireless market that give a global forecast along with forecasts for Europe, Asia, North America, and the Rest of the World. A forecast is included for mobile WiMAX and 3G subscribers, service revenue, device shipments and value, and Capex. A supplemental spreadsheet is included that includes the charts in the report along with further charts and tables for the main developed and developing countries that provide additional perspectives on the market.
